Ep 004: Get adventurous with Megan Fowler of Modern Moon Quilt Studio

Pull up a seat and chat with my friend, Megan Fowler, of Modern Moon Quilt Studio!

On this episode of the Patchwork Revival podcast, we dive deep into Megan’s quilting world and learn all about her journey from a kid with a Kenmore sewing machine to the mastermind behind Modern Moon Quilt Studio. Be sure to stay tuned to the end of the episode, where you’ll get a glimpse into Megan’s adventurous side as she describes the journey and inspiration behind her latest project, Quilt Scouts!

It all started with a sewing machine.

Megan’s earliest sewing memories begin when her parents encouraged her interest in sewing by gifting her a basic sewing machine. This little planted seed of creativity has grown into a recognizable and special brand in the quilting world: Modern Moon Quilt Studio! As a little girl, Megan remembers making Barbie clothes and other small sewing projects growing up, and eventually discovered quilting. Her first quilt was a self-drafted design (which she has since transformed into an official pattern!), and was the spark that lit the fire for her future quilting business and laid the groundwork for her passion for quilt pattern design. Megan's story is a testament to the power of learning with digital resources like YouTube, and highlights the shift in how quilting skills are acquired and passed down.

Modern Moon Quilt Studio

One look at Megan’s website or YouTube videos will give you all of the vintage vibes you can handle. The quilt patterns that Megan publishes as Modern Moon Quilt Studio embody a unique blend of modern aesthetics with a note of nostalgia, and draw their inspiration from retro themes and eras past. One of my favorite (and most unique) things about Modern Moon Quilt Studio patterns is how they pay homage to mid-century modern design. Clean lines, funky asymmetry, and beautiful colors are some of my favorite features of Megan’s Elroy quilt pattern. Then, there is Happy Camper, which all started with an idea to recreate the nostalgic memories held within a vintage thermos!

Megan’s latest adventure: Quilt Scouts

The latest chapter in Megan’s quilting story is the launch of Quilt Scouts, born from a lightbulb moment during a bedtime story with her son. Quilt Scouts is more than a membership—it's a community built on the foundations of learning, exploration, and adventure in the quilting world. Badges can be earned for mastering specific quilting skills or for engaging activities like quilt photography, visiting a quilt museum, or even listening to a quilting podcast! Quilt Scouts aims to bring quilters together, regardless of their skill level or background. To learn more about Quilt Scouts, visit www.quiltscouts.com, and then check out the incredibly detailed badge guide book!

Megan’s adventurous legacy

While Megan may not have envisioned the legacy she’s building, her innovative design style and vision for creating an adventurous quilting community is a wealth of inspiration for quilters everywhere. Whether you’re a seasoned quilter or just picking up your first piece of fabric, Megan’s story is a beautiful reminder that quilting is always about so much more than just the quilts we make - it’s the stories we tell and the folks who live those stories with us.

Thanks for tuning into this episode, and remember, Patchwork Revival is the podcast celebrating the generational connection in the quilts we love.

Until next time, friends!
